  Edfield Arthur was born October 4, 1910, near Baker, North Dakota, the son of Hendrick and Brithe Helene (Knutson) Odegard. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church. He graduated from New Rockford, North Dakota, High School and attended Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota. In 1934, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, double majoring in history and music education. He toured Norway as trombone soloist with the college band in 1935. On July 14, 1939, he married Ruth Moberg in Taylor's Falls, Minnesota. They had two children, Lorelyn Ann and David Arthur. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Odegard was a music teacher, first teaching in high schools. After receiving his Masters Degree at the University of Washington, he taught at Wartburg College. He taught at Stout State University in Wisconsin, after earning his Doctorate (Ph.D) from the University of Iowa.
